Volume I: God, the Angels, and Creation
Introduction by Cajetan Cuddy, O.P.
A Dominican and Thomistic guide to the essential truths of the Christian faith
Theology for the Layman is a rare work: a popular yet serious course in Catholic theology, written by American Dominican priests and arranged according to the wise order of St. Thomas Aquinas.
the Summa Theologiae · Catholic doctrine · formation for the laity · intellectual and spiritual clarity
“Theology for the Layman provides clear, profound, and even sublime reflection on the things that matter the most.”
From the Introduction
First published as a series of pamphlets beginning in 1941, Theology for the Layman was designed to give Catholic laymen a serious, orderly, and accessible formation in the truths of the Faith. Its contributors were Dominican priests who took seriously the layman’s need to understand not merely isolated doctrines, but the whole structure of Catholic belief.
This first volume, God, the Angels, and Creation, begins where theology must begin: with man’s need to know God, the existence and attributes of God, the divine knowledge and will, justice and mercy, providence and predestination, the mystery of the Trinity, the doctrine of creation, and the angelic world.
The new introduction by Cajetan Cuddy, O.P. situates the work for readers of the twenty-first century, showing why a systematic presentation of the Catholic faith remains urgently necessary in an age filled with confusion, rapid communication, ideological pressure, and fragmented religious knowledge.
This is theology without vagueness, dilution, or sentimentality: a serious initiation into the truths by which men live, pray, think, suffer, and attain their final end.
A complete vision
The Catholic faith is treated as an integral whole, not as scattered opinions or devotional fragments.
Following St. Thomas
The work follows the order and theological discipline of the Summa Theologiae.
Accessible, not simplistic
The chapters are written for lay readers while retaining doctrinal seriousness and precision.
For today’s confusion

Theology ordered to wisdom
A major recovery of popular Thomistic theology: clear enough for the layman, serious enough for study, and ordered toward the final end for which man was made.
